Sen. Sal DiDomenico announces that he has co-sponsored the Massachusetts Corporate Political Accountability Act, which aims to counter a recent Supreme Court ruling that could pave the way for unlimited spending on political campaigns by corporations and unions.

The legislation, filed by Sen. Jamie Eldridge, Rep. Cory Atkins and Rep. William Straus, addresses the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Citizens United versus FEC, which lifted campaign finance restrictions on corporations and unions, permitting them to spend an unlimited amount of money on political advertising.

The act would require new levels of disclosure and transparency for corporate spending during political elections. Requirements on corporations include full disclosure of political spending, approval from two-thirds of the corporation’s shareholders, and a ban on foreign corporations from influencing Massachusetts political elections. The legislation also prohibits “pay-to-play” contributions, banning state contractors from making campaign contributions or paying for political advertisements on behalf of any candidate for public office. The legislation has also won the early support of Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin.

DiDomenico was elected to the Senate in May 2010 to the Middlesex, Suffolk and Essex District, which includes Charlestown, Chelsea and Everett and portions of Allston-Brighton, Cambridge, Revere, Saugus and Somerville.
